1954 Bowman Card 66 Ted Williams

Your Home For Vintage Baseball Memorabilia

Key Cards:

  • 65 - Mickey Mantle
  • 66A - Ted Williams
  • 89 - Willie Mays

NOTES:

The 1954 Bowman Baseball card set consisted of 224 cards that measure 2 1/2" by 3 3/4. Bowman competing against the Topps Chewing Gum Company for dominance of the baseball card market quickly printed their cards. so quickly that about 40 of the set's 224 cards had statistical errors. variations exist in this set because of statistical errors that were subsequently corrected.

Topps signed exclusive contract with Ted Williams, who had been serving in Korea for the previous three years. Bowman was forced to pull card #66 of Williams from its set and replace it with a card of Jimmy Piersall (who was also featured on card #210). After the 1953 season, the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore, and Bowman's artists had no idea what the Orioles uniform would look like. So they simply made the uniforms up.
